Have you ever come home after a long day at work, wanting a home cooked meal but simply don’t have the energy to make one?

Well, there is a company that is trying to help you out in that respect, by giving you access to delicious home-made meals, without you lifting a finger.

Wazupa as a service has been in a pilot phase in Johannesburg and Pretoria, and what the people behind it do is connect home cooks with people who can’t (or don’t have the time) to cook. It is essentially the Uber equivalent of cooked food.

The service and the app has now been rolled out nationally, so you can get some of the most delicious food, right in your neighbourhood.

It works in a rather simple way: have a look at what nearby home cooks (who are signed up to the service) have to offer, order your dinner and pay for it. From there, you have the option to either collect your food, or have it delivered to your door.

Wazupa chief executive officer Lance Baum explained how he came up with the idea.

“When my wife had a baby, our friends used to drop off home cooked meals. I found it so exciting to try someone else’s delicious food in my own home. I realised that it’s also a tremendous opportunity to help people to do what they love and be able to earn a secondary income from it,” he said.

“People want to eat healthier, and we can help remove the guilt of junk takeaways, as many of us are just too busy. Wazupa can help get families around the table at meal times again.”

If you want to be on the other side of the service, you can also sign up as a cook – which will net you a small income in the process.

After creating a profile and setting everything up from your end, you are ready to start taking orders. The pricing will be up to you, and 85% of the profit will go towards your pocket, as Wazupa only takes 15% of the retail selling price of the transaction.

The company is also rather proud of the fact that since it became available in July, it has already signed up 150 chefs and almost 700 customers. In total, there is over 2 000 items on the menu to choose from.

We think it is a real cool idea, as you sometimes just don’t have the time or the inclination to make a home meal for yourself.
