Watch live tomorrow: SABC to answer to Parly on Hlaudi saga

[UPDATE 5/10: The meeting will be broadcast live on YouTube from 11am. Watch the stream below.

The SABC board will appear before Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Communications to answer on the appointment of Hlaudi Mostoeneng as its Group Executive of Corporate Affairs.

Last month, the committee called for a meeting with the SABC board to discuss the dismissal of a bid to appeal the ruling that Motsoeneng’s appointment as COO in 2014 was unlawful.

A day after this was announced, Motsoeneng was controversially appointed to his new position, prompting the committee to add the matter to the meeting agenda.

As it stands, this is what will be discussed tomorrow, when the meeting is held:

  • The implementation of the recommendations of the Public Protector’s Report – When Governance and Ethics Fail – detailing the unlawfulness of Motsoeneng’s COO appointment
  • Actions the Board has taken in light of the decision of the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) ruling
  • The process followed (or not) in the appointment of Motsoeneng to the position of Group Executive of Corporate Affairs
  • Implications of the High Court, SCA and Icasa ruling on the Board Charter; Compliance of the Board to Section 13 and Section 15 of the Broadcasting Act (i.e the ruling that the ban on violent protest footage was unalwful and had to be lifted).

The meeting will run from around 11am to 4pm and will be broadcast live on Parliament TV, channel 408 on DStv. We will be tuning in. Possibly after a stiff drink.
