SABC wasted R2.6 million on flopped concert

The SABC spent exactly R2 695 750.50c on the failed “Thank You SABC Concert” last month, Minister of Communications, Faith Muthambi has said.

Muthambi detailed this in a written response to questions sent by the DA regarding the concert, which the public broadcaster said it had not organised.

Muthambi’s department however, did not make any contributions towards the event.

“The Thank You SABC concert was an initiative hosted and coordinated by Phumelela Group at Orlando Stadium to thank the SABC and the Board for its endeavours to develop local music and content. Costs pertaining to the event would have been directed and charged to the organisers by all service providers contracted to the event,” she said.

The concert, billed to have 100 local artists performing, with tickets selling for just R100, was a massive failure, as barely a quarter of the 40 000-seater Orlando Stadium was filled.

Two days after the concert, SABC spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago, told htxt.africa that it would not comment on the concert’s failure as it was “not the organisers”.

“The SABC charter obliges the corporation to organise, present, produce, provide or subsidise concerts, shows, variety performances, revenues, musicals in connection with the broadcasting and programme supply services of the corporation or any purpose incidental thereto,” Muthambi explained.

She further added that as a result of this obligation, the public broadcaster has identified key events that are aligned to it, “as well as those events that have the potential of retaining and growing audience share by meeting the needs and expectations of multicultural mass and niche audiences in all official South African languages”.
