Two teenage members of Lizard Squad and PoodleCorp charged for alleged cyber crimes

The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) has revealed that two teenagers linked to rogue internet organisations, PoodleCorp and Lizard Squad have been charged for allegedly operating “cyber-attack-for-hire websites”.

The pair of 190year-old’s are Zachary Buchta of Fallston, Maryland and Bradley Jan Willem Van Rooy of Leiden, Netherlands.

The pair has also been charged with conspiracy to cause damage to protected computers. In plain terms this relates to distributed denial of service attacks (DDoS) that both PoodleCorp and Lizard Squad are well known for.

Back in July, PoodleCorp claimed responsibility for a DDoS attack on Pokemon GO servers. “We are simply DDoSing with the help of a very very big botnet. We have various devices, pretty much all of the internet,” a PoodleCorp representative said at the time.

It has also been alleged that Buchta and Van Rooy conspired with others to operate phonebomber.net. The website allowed customers to pay to have a victim get a harassing phone call from a spoofed phone number.

One victim reportedly received an abusive phone call every hour for thirty days.  A recording of one such call stated to the victim, “better look over your [expletive] back because I don’t flying [expletive] if we have to burn your [expletive] house down, if we have to [expletive] track your [expletive] family down, we will [expletive] your [expletive] up [expletive],” according to the DOJ.

The rap sheet continues as the DOJ alleges that Buchta and Van Rooy conspired with other members of Lizard Squad to traffic stolen credit card information from “thousands of victims”.

A number domains tied to Lizard Squad and PoodleCorp were also seized by the authorities.

While these two ne’er do wells are just teenagers the crimes they are charged with are incredibly serious. The charge of conspiracy to cause damage to protected computers carries with it a maximum sentence of 10 years, that’s not to mention the other crimes they have been charged with.
