Bright young scientists awarded at Eskom Expo

A number of young South African scientists were recognised for their innovative projects in a special awards ceremony held at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair.

Currently in its 36th year, the Eskom Expo is South Africa’s largest school-level science fair which is also a national initiative.

This year sees 488 of the most outstanding projects by 580 primary and high school learners that are on display in 24 different categories that range from Agricultural Science right through to Sustainability.

Yesterday was the Eskom Expo Special Awards, where awards are given for the Best Female Project, Best Development Project, Best Energy Project and Best Energy Efficiency Project.

The winners are:

  • Eskom Award for Best Development Project – You don’t have to be a rocket scientist… or do you? Sanele Hlogwane from Dr Joseph Shabalala Secondary School (Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal) picked up this award with a hugely ambitious project called “Cheaper solid-state rocket fuel”.
  • Eskom Award for Best Energy Project – Katinka Wilkinson from Hershel Sec (Cape Town) won for her domestic energy storage project, “Investigation of performance of homemade flywheel energy storage systems”.
  • Eskom Award for Best Energy Efficiency Project – Johann Naduvileparabii from Hoerskool Bergviam (Ehlanzeni) want to take aircon to the masses with “Powerless shack cooler”.
  • Eskom Award for Best Female – Eleni Hajimarkos from Saheti School (Johannesburg) with a project entitled “Catching the next wheel”.

Each learner also walked away with a laptop.

“These learners show what can be achieved with hard work, commitment and a passion for science. South Africa faces many complex problems but with bright young minds like our finalists and winners, we will be able to tackle these challenges head on,” said Eskom Acting Group Executive for Transmission, Risk and Sustainability, Leo Dlamini.
