SA’s R1m online gaming tournament league winners announced

South Africa’s best Counter Strike: Global Offensive and Dota 2 teams have been crowned at the finals of the Telkom Digital Gaming League (DGL) Masters held in Johannesburg this weekend.

The DGL Masters series was announced back in January and offered up the largest prize pool yet seen by local esport players. The Masters saw participation from eight multi-gaming organisations including: Bravado Gaming, White Rabbit Gaming, CarboN esports, Damage Control, Flipsid3 Tactics, Aperture Gaming, Veneration esports and Xperts@Total.Chaos.

CS:GO winners

Fan favourites, Bravado Gaming, swept the finals taking two maps off of CarboN esports and winning the finals 2-0. Bravado walked off with a cool R200 000 for winning the CS:Go competition and CarboN received R90 000 for placing second. In third place was Damage Control earning itself R50 000 and in fourth was Flipsid3 Tactics taking home R40 000.

As with many tournaments globally, nobody walks away with nothing. While prize money was lower, Aperture Gaming and White Rabbit Gaming each won R35 000 and Veneration esports and Xperts@Total.Chaos received R25 000 for placing seventh and eighth.

Dota 2 winners

It was a year of upsets for SA Dota 2 fans. Having won the Telkom Digital Gaming Championship in 2014 and 2015, Bravado Gaming were favourites going into the tournament.

Sadly fans of Bravado would not see the team go on to win the Dota 2 tournament. Instead the winners of the series were White Rabbit Gaming who managed to take the series 2-1.

The winners get R200 000 while Bravado earned itself R90 000. In third place was Aperture gaming which received R50 000, fourth place and R40 000 went to CarboN esports.

In fifth and sixth place was Flipsid3 Tactics and Damage Control respectively which both earn R35 000 and at the bottom of the log was Veneration esports and Xperts@Total.Chaos which both get R25 000 for their efforts.

The Digital Gaming Championship

Tucked away in the bowels of the Ticketpro Dome, the Telkom Digital Gaming Championship also took place at rAge this weekend. While it might not hold the same gargantuan prize pool as the Masters league did the teams competing in the DGC played incredibly and could soon be challenging Bravado and White Rabbit Gaming for the top of the South African esports pile.

Congratulations to the teams below for winning their tournaments.

  • Counter Strike: Global Offensive: eN.Heat
  • Dota 2: EXDEE Dota 2
  • League of Legends: Ventus Gaming
  • Battlefield 4: Pulse.Evolve
  • Call of Duty Black Ops 3 (PC): cbN-Carbon-COD
  • Call of Duty Black Ops 3 (PS4): eN. eN F34R
  • Hearthstone: Alan “gas” Gaskon

It was a good year for local esports and if the fact that there was no seating at the esports stage at rAge was anything to go by, next year might be even bigger. Well done to all the teams and of course Telkom for supporting our local gamers.
