Gordhan asks SA social media for solutions to #FeesMustFall crisis

Minister of Finance, Pravin Gordhan, is making headlines this morning following the news that he’s been issued a summons by the National Prosecuting Authority for fraud over the ongoing investigation into a “rogue unit” at SARS while he was running SA’s tax inspector.

Before this blew up, however, there was something slightly less incendiary, but still quite interesting. Gordhan has also asked South African citizens for advice on how the National Treasury should approach the #FeesMustFall matter. He’s looking to crowdsource ideas, apparently, in the run up to the Medium Term Budget Speech (MTBS) this month.

The MTBS will be presented on 26th October against the backdrop of a sluggish economy, the looming threat of a possible negative view by independent rating agencies, fees must fall campaign as well as uncertainty in the global economic conditions.

#FeesMustFall protests have been ongoing across South African universities since government announced that institutions could raise fees for 2017 by no more than 8%.

Students engaging in protests, have rejected the increase, calling for free higher education for all those who can’t afford it.

Gordhan also wants input on the following issues:

  • How South Africa can achieve inclusive economic growth
  • How South Africa can use its resources to ensure efficiencies
  • How government, civil society, unions and businesses can work together in oneness of purpose to achieve the economic objectives of our country

Suggestions can be sent through Treasury’s Twitter account (using the hashtag #MTBPS2016), Treasury’s Facebook account or Treasury’s website.

“The minister looks forward to your contribution,” Treasury said.
