The Portfolio Committee on Communications’ inquiry into the fitness of the SABC board, in terms of section 15A of the Broadcasting Act of 1999, will begin in under a week’s time.

The inquiry was agreed upon last Wednesday during a meeting between the committee and the SABC board, where issues including the controversial appointment of Hlaudi Motsoeneng as GE of Corporate Affairs, were discussed.

Two members of the SABC Board announced their resignation during the meeting and told Parliament that their colleagues were not fit to run the public broadcaster.

The committee resolved to institute an inquiry, in the lead up to the process of dissolving the board.

“The committee has agreed unanimously among the various parties that there are serious challenges with the current Board and that intervention is needed,” the committee said in a statement.

“Through the office of its Chairperson, Humphrey Maxegwana, the committee is now writing to the remaining members of the board, those who resigned and others who might provide critical information to inform them of the forthcoming inquiry,” it added.

Should the committee decide that the board be dissolved, as the appointing authority, President Jacob Zuma must dissolve the board. The Broadcasting Act also provides for an interim board to be appointed for a period not exceeding six months.
