German transport minister says Tesla’s Autopilot is “misleading”

German transport minister has sent a letter to Tesla requesting the company stop advertising its vehicles’ Autopilot feature as it may be misleading.

A spokeswoman for the ministry confirmed on Sunday that a letter had been sent to Tesla expressing concerns from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) that the Autopilot function may lead drivers to assume their attention was not needed.

“It can be confirmed that a letter to Tesla exists with the request to no longer use the misleading term Autopilot for the driver assistance system of the car,” Reuters quoted the spokeswoman as saying.

The KBA mirrored the ministry’s concerns. It reportedly wrote to Tesla saying, “In order to prevent misunderstanding and incorrect customers’ expectations, we demand that the misleading term Autopilot is no longer used in advertising the system.”

At this stage it would be amiss not to mention that Autopilot has a number of safety measures in place. For one, the feature is disabled by default and when it is engaged the driver is informed that they must be able to take back control of the vehicle from Autopilot at any point.

“Just as in an airplane, when used properly, Autopilot reduces driver workload and provides an added layer of safety when compared to purely manual driving,” a Tesla spokeswoman said on the matter.
