Tencent announces folding drone that can stream HD video to WeChat

Tencent has announced its take on the folding drone. Much like the DJI Mavic or the GoPro Karma, Tencent’s Ying drone is lightweight and ups the ante with a few more extras.

The most notable feature is the ability to stream video to a WeChat feed at 720p, directly from the drone.

The Ying’s on-board camera is also able to record footage at UHD (3 840 x 2 160) resolutions much like the drones from DJI and GoPro.

While a UHD camera and the ability to live stream a flight is cool, the best feature of the Ying is its price. The DJI Mavic holds a $999 (R19 999 locally) price tag while Tencent has said the Ying will retail for $199 (around R4 200).

The Ying is also lighter than the Mavic according to a report by Recode; the Ying weighs under 450 grams while the Mavic tips the scales at 725grams.

The Ying was developed in partnership with Qualcomm and Zerotech – a Chinese drone maker – and release is set for the end of October.

There is no word yet on whether the Ying will come to South Africa or if this is an exclusively Chinese product. That won’t stop us from dreaming though.
