Government tightens security to prevent matric exam cheating

Today marks the beginning of the 2016 National Senior Certificate Matric exams, with Computer Applications Technology learners doing their practical exam.

According to the national Department of Basic Education, it’s been hard at work ensuring an appropriate and enabling environment is set to enable seamless administration, including tighten security measures to prevent cheating scandals.

Last year, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng were rocked by cheating scandals in a number of schools, when papers were leaked by learners via social media.

Gauteng Education said it’s tightened security around exams, providing an extensive network of invigilators  to ensure that the processes relating to conduct, administration and management of the examination is fair, credible and of integrity. In addition to the process of monitoring, daily incident reports will be submitted by districts, collated and submitted to the national Education department and Umalusi.

“The department is working in with law enforcement agencies to ensure that all measures are taken to strengthen security during the examination. Eighty distribution points have been identified for the collection of question papers and submission of scripts. Appointed security companies with an armed guard, will escort all exam material,” Gauteng Education said.

The main exam starts on the 24th October with the English paper.

In Gauteng, the provincial department today said has done everything possible to provide the best possible chance for each pupil to do well.

The province has registered the second highest number of candidates at 153 793, behind KwaZulu-Natal’s 169 661 learners.

Gauteng candidates will be writing their exams in 1 158 centres across 15 districts.

Gauteng Education also said it’s pleased by the increase in pupils who’ll be writing maths and science.

Matric exams wrap up on 29th November.
