Raspberry Pi console makes your house look like a Star Trek scene

If you’re a fan of Star Trek, chances are the hype around Virtual Reality (VR) may have made you wonder how far off the Holodeck is from becoming a reality.

While that may still be a long way off, you could have some hint of that tech in your house right now.

A project recently popped up on maker sharing site hackster.io that combines the look of Star Trek with home automation. A user known only as Christian, who is listed as an engineer and architect from the Netherlands, has taken their connected house and wired it up to a central console. From there the security camera outputs are displayed, weather conditions are available and the house’s music and lights can be controlled.

The interface of the console is wrapped is a GUI modeled on LCARS from Star Trek. This is the OS you see on all the displays in the shows and movies and its design – mostly black with large, colourful blocks – is instantly recognisable.

Seeing the project in use above and some concessions were made. The large videos don’t exactly go with the aesthetic but it’s a happy compromise to create a functional device.

If this looks like something you’d want in your house, Christian states that he or she may soon do a tutorial including better code and functionality such as facial recognition.

//Update: We forgot to include a similar project from local maker Toby Kurien. He has also created an LCARS interface for the Raspberry Pi and has been kind enough to stick it up on Github for you to download right now. Looking at the screenshot provided on the page and Kurien’s is even more faithful to the source material.
