Watch: Hlaudi accuses SABC board members of being “captured”

The SABC as an organisation can never be captured by anyone, especially the controversial Gupta family, however there are some individuals in the public broadcaster’s board who are operating under the thumb of politicians.

This is according to SABC GE of Corporate, Hlaudi Motsoeneng, who made the accusation during a The New Age Business Brief (TNA Biz Brief) this morning.

The topic for discussion during the TNA Biz Brief was state capture in South Africa, a topic that has seen the Gupta family being accused of acting as puppet masters who use President Jacob Zuma to deploy certain people to ministerial posts, to serve their family business interests.

Motsoeneng was invited as a panelist, alongside SABC CEO, James Aguma, to discuss whether or not the public broadcaster has also been captured.

The greater part of the year has seen the SABC being in the centre of controversies, such as the ban on violent public protest footage and the firing of eight journalists.

When asked by SABC anchor, Peter Ndoro, about an SABC capture, Motsoeneng explained that neither he, nor the SABC are captured, but said he was not happy with a number of board members who have been captured.

Interestingly enough, it wasn’t that long ago when Motsoeneng himself was part of the board, which now remains a shadow of its former self as three members have stepped down after Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Communications called for an inquiry into the public broadcaster’s fitness to carry out its duties.
