Former SABC board members to be brought as witnesses in Parliamentary inquiry

A number of former members of the SABC board who were either dismissed or stepped down, will be part of Parliament’s inquiry into the fitness of the public broadcaster’s board.

The committee postponed the inquiry, which was supposed to start today, to a yet-to-be-announced date.

According to the committee’s chairperson, Humphrey Maxegwana the inquiry was postponed in order to give the board and witnesses who have been called enough time to prepare themselves and their legal representatives for the inquiry.

A list of 26 witnesses including ex-board members (which also include Krish Naidoo and Vusi Mavuso who resigned this month), who have been invited to balance evidence that will be given in the inquiry.

Members of the current SABC board will be served with hearing notice by no later than Friday, 28th October, after which the inquiry date will then be decided upon as soon as possible.

Maxegwana explained that the committee to proceed with inquiry at earliest convenience.

So far, three out of four non-executive board members, Mbulaheni Maguvhe, Ndivhoniswani Aaron Tshidzumba and Nomvuyo Mhlakaza have indicated that they will not be resigning and will attend the inquiry, while deputy chairperson, Thabisile Khumalo, has not replied.

All members of the board and witnessed are expected to be present physically to answer questions themselves.

Board must be dissolved

Committee member, Lerumo Kalako, said that the inquiry was necessary in order to follow due processes and avoid and legal issues and that it is “very clear that board must be dissolved”.
