Hawks brought in to investigate Limpopo matric exam leak

The 2016 matric exams have already been hit by a cheating scandal, just a few days after they’ve begun.

According to the Department of Basic Education, Mathematics Paper Two exam paper was leaked to Grade 12 learners in Giyani, in the Mopani District in Limpopo, before the exam was written.

This after the department had said it had security measures in place to avoid repeat of last year’s cheating scandal.

This is they third consecutive year that matric exams have been hit by a paper leak.

According to the department, the leak is viewed in a serious light and it has involved law enforcement agencies, the Hawks and the SA Police Service, to swiftly investigate this matter. A case has been opened with the police.

“’We are going to quarantine all the scripts of the schools in the area to establish if there are any patterns. A team from DBE and province are working together with law enforcement to get to the bottom of this matter so that we can take appropriate action,” Elijah Mhlanga, spokesperson for the Department of Basic Education, said in a statement.

“Preparing for and managing an examination of this magnitude is a mammoth task. It requires a concerted effort from all stakeholders – most especially administrators that are a key to the success or failure of the entire National Senior Certificate examination process,” the department said.

The department has assured the public that it is has taken extra ordinary measures to safeguard the integrity of the exams and is working tirelessly to expose and charge those behind the incident of maths exam paper in Limpopo.

“The Department will do everything possible to maintain the high level of security across the country and would like to caution learners not to take part in the criminal acts. We appeal to learners, parents and members of the community to report any incidents of papers being leaked and expose those behind the acts,” it said.
