Joburg motorists should avoid these roads damaged by floods

Following Wednesday’s flash flood rains and continued rainfall last night and today, the Joburg Roads Agency (JRA) has warned motorists to avoid a number of roads and bridges that have been damaged.

Highways and bridges were the worst affected during the flash floods, with many motorists being trapped by water which had submerged and swept away vehicles.

The death toll as a result of drownings now stands at seven.

Motorists should be very cautious or avoid altogether, the following areas.

  • Witkoppen Road – road damage
  • R55 at Kyalami bridge – collapsed
  • Linksfield Road, off-ramp and on ramp to N3
  • Corner Louis Botha and Houghton Drive near Sasol—collapsed wall
  • Siyabusa (Rabie Ridge) – flooding due to insufficient stormwater system capacity
  • All low-lying bridges between Kyalami and Dainfern flooded
  • Joburg Zoo wall collapsed next to Jan Smuts
  • M1 South run off from Houghton to M1 South near AGSA office – debris on road
  • Alexandra John Nhlanhla bridge – washed away
  • Buccleuch Bridge also washed away

According to JRA MD, Sean Phillips, areas which have had recurring blockages and have been identified and termed them flooding hotspots.

Maintenance and repairs of storm water drains is being carried by JRA and is also being prioritised.

Heavy rain is again expected for today in Joburg.
