Man suspected of leaking matric exam paper appears in Limpopo court

A 52-year-old man suspected of being behind the leaking of the Matric Maths Paper Two exam earlier this month appeared in the Giyani Magistrate’s Court today on charges of fraud, corruption and theft.

Tinyiko Khosa reportedly handed himself over at the Giyani Police Station yesterday.

The paper was leaked to pupils at a high school in Giyani and spread via a WhatsApp study group.

The leak was exposed when some pupils came forward to confess they’d had access to a copy of the paper before the exam was written. The student who’d originally leaked it on the pupils’ WhatsApp group also came forward to confess.

A task team was then established by Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, involving the SAPS and Hawks, to investigate the leak. The department welcomed Khosa’s arrest. It is believed that Khosa owns two private colleges in Malamulele, Limpopo. He will apply for bail on the 23rd of this month.

This is the third year in a row that matric exams have been hit by a cheating scandal.
