Gauteng gov implements measures to tackle natural disasters in future

The Gauteng Provincial government has roped in a few of its departments to put measures in place to tackle natural disasters in future, following last week’s flash floods.

The Gauteng Executive Council has declared a state of disaster in parts of the province affected by flash floods, at a special meeting held yesterday.

It was resolved that the Gauteng will review its Disaster Management Strategy to strengthen existing capability to deal with disasters.

The Department of Roads and Transport will conduct regular checks on all Gauteng roads, bridges and other infrastructure that was affected by the flash floods, to make sure that they can withstand any form of harsh weather.

The Department of Health is also set to activate an Outbreak Response Unit to minimise the impact of a possible outbreak of the e-coli bacteria, after tests confirmed its presence in the Jukskei River, which was affected by the floods, and resulted in a number of residents in Alexandra living on the Juksei’s embankment having their homes and belongings washed away.
Premier David Makhura will, in terms of Section 41 of the Disaster Management Act 57 of 2002, issue a notice in the provincial gazette declaring a state of disaster in the areas affected by extreme weather conditions.
