Pokémon and Metroid fan games quietly removed from The Game Awards 2016

Fan-made games based on the Metroid and Pokémon properties have quietly been removed from the “Best Fan Creation” category of The Game Awards 2016.

The two games in question are Another Metroid 2 Remake (AM2R) and Pokémon Uranium. Both of these games were previously listed in the category, a fact reported on by many sites earlier this month.

A user on NeoGaf pointed out yesterday that, if you visit the website of The Game Awards now, both of these games have been removed. The only two remaining entries in the category are Brutal Doom 64 and Enderal: The Shards of Order.

Now this may not be a surprise to you when you remember that both Metroid and Pokémon are properties owned by Nintendo, who have a habit of taking down non-official games. Both AM2R and Pokémon Uranium have, in the past, been struck with copyright claims by Nintendo.

Now here’s where it gets interesting: Reggie Fils-Aime, President of Nintendo America, is on the advisory board of The Game Awards. As The Game Awards “Rules & Voting” section points out: “Game publishers and developers have no involvement in the selection of nominees or winners”. Make of that what you will.

At this point we don’t know the real reason why these two games were removed. We’ve reached out to the organisers of The Game Awards for comment and, at this time, have had no reply. Polygon have also tried to contact Nintendo and Geoff Keighley (creator and host of the awards) and have not heard back from them either.

The remaining contests will fight it out with winners being announced during a show on 1st December.
