DA back in court to have Hlaudi removed from SABC

Today sees the DA facing off against SABC General Executive of Corporate Affairs, Hlaudi Motsoeneng, in a bid to have his appointment to his current job declared invalid and have him chucked out of the public broadcaster for good.

Last month, the DA wrote to the only remaining non-executive member of the SABC board, Mbulaheni Maguvhe, to have Motsoeneng fired with immediate effect.

The party told Maguvhe he had two days to do so or it would be going back to the Western Cape High Court (the same court it approached to have his appointment as COO declared unlawful) to fight the matter out in court.

The court application was filed on 12th October. In the original affidavit, the DA wants Motsoeneng to be removed from the SABC and be barred from holding any high position, unless and until former Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela’s report into his appointment as COO is set aside by the Pretoria High Court.

The party will now submit a supplementary affidavit containing additional damning information, including the fact that Motsoeneng implemented the 80% local TV content quota without conducting a risk assessment, among other evidence.

“While it is not ideal to approach the courts, the DA firmly believes that the SABC Board, now comprising of one member, and the Minister of Communications, Faith Muthambi, have failed in their duty to maintain the integrity of the national broadcaster,” the party said earlier this week.

“Therefore the DA was left with little choice but to request that the courts intervene, in the interest of the public, to prevent Mr Motsoeneng from continuing his one-man wrecking ball routine.”
