Petition launched to keep Gareth Cliff’s latest book off the shelves

An anonymous user on Amandla.mobi has created an online petition with a view to removing Gareth Cliff’s forthcoming book, Cliffhanger, from retailers’ shelves.

South African social media users reacted with outrage yesterday following a story in the Sunday Times that Gareth Cliff allegedly spiked the drink of former Idols SA judge, Marah Louw with vodka. The alleged incident reportedly resulted in Louw’s contract not being renewed.

Cliff, for his part sent out a tweet saying that the headline in the paper’s piece was misleading and that the real story could be read in his book.

Now, a petition has been drawn up calling on the public to decry any outlets that stock Cliff’s latest book.

“A huge wave of public opinion against companies that stock his book could force his books off the shelves,” reads the petition.

The petition is addressed to a number of outlets and calls on these retailers to, “Stop selling the book “Cliffhanger” by Gareth Cliff. In the book he admits spiking Marah Louw’s drink and he is boasting about this illegal activity to make a quick buck.”

Of course, the book is not yet available and is only scheduled to be released on Thursday and all that is accessible to the public is an excerpt published in the Sunday Times yesterday.

At time of writing the petition has garnered 49 signatures with a view to getting as many as 100 signatures in support of this cause.
