South Africa’s version of Moana to feature song by local singer Lira

The first end credits song of the South African version of Moana will feature a cover of “How Far I’ll Go” performed by local singer Lira.

This was announced today by the local arm of Disney accompanied by YouTube videos of the song as well as a behind the scenes segment, both of which you can watch below.

This version of the song will be in the movie when it launches locally on December 2nd. If you really like the track, it will be available to buy from the South African iTune store on its own from December 9th.

The original version of “How Far I’ll Go” was performed by Canadian singer Alessia Cara and written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who is best known for creating and starring in the Broadway musical Hamilton.

“How Far I’ll Go beautifully encapsulates the elements of Moana that resonate with me, to break away from conformity, to be bold, go out and discover what makes you uniquely you,” says Lira, “It’s a real honour to be involved! Also, the fact that Disney is able to incorporate and feature African voices in projects such as this, is truly exciting.”

With the addition of a South African voice, this movie really is an international effort, and we’re glad some local talent made it in.
