The Tamagotchi survives as a DIY desktop Arduino project

If you’ve never owned a Tamagotchi – a small, handheld electronic game where you take care of a digital pet – your childhood can still be saved thanks to a project that popped up on Instructables.

The “Desktop Tamagotchi” seeks to recreate the famous toy as a gadget you keep on your desk instead of carrying it around.

The result is a simple LED matrix to display the pet and several other game boards, with an ATmega328P with the Arduino bootloader (as well as some other electronics) strapped to the back of it.

Here’s the result:

This version of the game is a completely customised variant was created from scratch. The uploader states that the pet has five basic stats in health, weight, happiness, hunger and age. The player’s goal is to manage these stats, as most actions have both a positive and negative consequence. Feeding it candy, for example, increases happiness, but also increases weight and decreases health. very true to life, then.

To the most time consuming part of the project, however, was the menus and animations. These were created in Paint.net and Excel, if you can believe it, and the Excel file needed for the project is included in the tutorial.

Of course, this all means nothing without the code to tell everything what to do. Luckily, it’s also included in the tutorial.

If you’re interested in making your own Tamagotchi or seeing how it was made, make sure to see the full tutorial on Instructables.
