Although PlayStation’s upcoming robotic dinosaur game Horizon Zero Dawn is still a few months away, it already has a large group of fans.
One of those fans is Wayne de Beer from right here in South Africa. He also happens to be a big fan of LEGO.
We ran into him recently at a local LEGO show (more on that soon) , and he let us know how he turned one of the machines from the game into a custom build:
Basically when I saw the first trailer for Horizon Zero Dawn I fell in love with the design of the Tallneck (their name… not mine :) ). I scoured around the net to find concept art and any other references I could find to help me understand the shape better. Since the dish on the head is such a prominent feature, I started from there and selected the biggest white dish I had in my collection. I scaled the artwork so that the diameter of the dish and the printed version of the artwork were the same to get the overall proportions correct.
But that’s not where the story of the Tallneck ends, as the design was destined to leave South Africa and make it back to the people who created it in the first place.
de Beer tells us that he posted a picture of the creation on Facebook, tagged it with the name of the game, and forgot about it.
A few weeks pass and the community manager from developers Guerrilla Games, Jeroen Roding, got in contact with de Beer over Facebook Messenger and asked if they could somehow get their own.
After the instructions had been drawn up, and the folks over at Guerrilla Games had sourced all the required pieces, a new Tallneck had been built which now lives in Amsterdam with the rest of the development team.

If you want more robodinos, you’re in luck. de beer is currently working on also giving the Thunderjaw (the one that looks like a T-Rex) the LEGO treatment.
“It’s gonna take a while to build, but hopefully it will have just as big an impact as the first one,” Said de beer.
