Eskom can cut power to eight municipalities

The North Gauteng High Court has ruled that Eskom can cut off the power supply to eight municipalities.

Judge Hans Fabricius made the ruling on an urgent application to stop the parastatal cutting power, which submitted to the court by civil rights group AfriForum. Judgement in the matter was reserved yesterday.

In his ruling Fabricus said that “muncipalities ought to be held accountable” for the outstanding debt owed to Eskom. It was also his contention that the parastatal was under no obligation to supply power to ratepayers. Rather, he said, that obligation – along with the obligation to supply other basic services lies with the municipalities.

Eskom said yesterday that if AfriForum’s interdict failed it would start cutting power to the municipalities from next Tuesday. Of the eight municipalities affected by this ruling, seven are in the Free State.

They are Dihlabeng, Mailonyana, Mantsopa, Moqhaka, Nala, Nkentoana and Tokologo. Thembelihle in the Northern Cape is also affected.
