Uber opens data for 2bn trips worldwide to help transport planners, researchers

With schools starting up this morning and many commuters trading the beach for a boardroom table, traffic is back with a vengeance.

This morning Uber has revealed a new product, which may turn out to be a boon to city planners hoping to alleviate the pangs of sitting in traffic.

The product is called Movement and it will use the data Uber has acquired over the last six-and-a-half years to help city planners make better decisions about how best to improve existing infrastructure and where investment should be targeted for future developments.

All the data that Uber will share as part of Movement will be anonymised and the firm has said that it has taken steps to insure that user and driver behaviour cannot be gleaned from the tool.

Movement is still somewhat closed off and you’ll have to key in an email address so that Uber can inform you of when the platform will be made available to all.

“In the weeks ahead, we’ll be gradually rolling out Movement to everyone,” Uber said.

Movement is being made available under a Creative Commons, Attribution Non-Commercial license so users can use the data so long as they credit Uber however, they won’t be able to just make their own app based off of the insights and make money from it.

We’re quite excited to get our hands on this data to see what we can deduce from it so keep an eye on htxt.africa in the coming weeks to see what we find when the service is made available to us.
