NSFAS re-opens funding applications for university and college students

Students still looking for assistance to fund their education at a university or college can from today apply for funding from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).

NSFAS is government’s tertiary education funding scheme, which assists thousands of students in financial need across the country with funding.

Online and walk-in applications for 2017 were originally opened from 1st August 2016 to 30th November 2016, but due to the massive influx of pupils and parents asking for an extension to after the release of the matric results and after consultations with stakeholder government departments, another round of applications was set for this year.

Applications can be sent in either online on the NSFAS website or manually at various application centres across the country. Last year’s application window saw 129 382 online and 104 088 manual applications being sent in.

Those wanting funding to study at a government TVET College have until 14th February to apply, while those going to public universities have until 20th January.

Although NSFAS will accept paper applications, universities and TVET colleges are encouraged to assist students to submit online applications during these application periods. This will speed up the process of evaluation and funding to students.

Those who missed out on the first window period are encouraged to take advantage of this second chance and apply.

On top of funding for fees and books, depending on an individual’s application, NSFAS will provide successful applicants with mobile vouchers for food, transport, accommodation and travel expenses from various merchants including supermarket chains.

Head over to the NSFAS website to submit your application or locate an application centre near you.
