The Oculus V ZeniMax Media saga is headed to court soon

Back in May 2014 ZeniMax Media – Bethesda’s parent company – filed a lawsuit against Oculus and Facebook alleging that the firms had stolen information from ZeniMax to craft the now well known Oculus Rift.

Now that suit appears to be headed to court.

At the heart of the lawsuit is the relationship between game designer John Carmack and Oculus founder Palmer Luckey. The lawsuit alleges that Carmack had started communicating with Luckey in 2012 while he was employed at ZeniMax Media.

The suit describes the headset at the time as “primitive” and states that it lacked integrated motion sensors, a head mount and other features that would have stymied the headset from making it to market.

Then Carmack left ZeniMax to move to Oculus and ZeniMax claims that the designer took thousands of files with him that aided in the development of Oculus. Worse still ZeniMax claims that Facebook knew Oculus had used stolen property to create the Rift before it purchased the firm for a cool $2 billion.

The selection for the jury who will serve during court proceeding began this week according to The Next Web and hopefully this means this suit is decided on before long.

Further to this ZeniMax has said that the Oculus has “disseminated to the press the false and fanciful story that Luckey was the brilliant inventor of VR technology who had developed that technology in his parent’s garage. In fact, that story was utterly and completely false.”

ZeniMax is looking for a $2 billion payout from Oculus. That would buy a lot of underarm deodorant.
