Oculus V ZeniMax Media: Zuckerberg takes the stand today

Mark Zuckerberg will appear in a Dallas court today to testify that Oculus was not built on stolen technology.

The lawsuit sees ZeniMax Media claiming that Palmer Luckey (creator of the Oculus Rift) and John Carmack (developer of Doom and Quake) used stolen information to hone the Oculus Rift into the headset it is today.

Facebook acquired Oculus in 2014 for $2 billion, the same amount that ZeniMax Media is seeking for damages in its lawsuit.

In court filings ZeniMax Media described Luckey’s headset as primitive before Carmack joined Oculus. The developer worked for both id Software as well Oculus for a time before ultimately choosing to pursue the virtual reality aspirations of Oculus completely in 2013.

ZeniMax Media claims that Carmack secretly siphoned off a wealth of information from the firm when he left, information that is alleged to have been used to better the Rift.

It is expected that Zuckerberg will argue that ZeniMax Media had an opportunity to invest in Oculus and passed on it. The Facebook founder will also likely argue that the Rift is the result of the Oculus team’s hard work according to the BBC.

“We’re disappointed that another company is using wasteful litigation to attempt to take credit for technology that it did not have the vision, expertise, or patience to build,” an Oculus spokesperson told Business Insider.

The suit is more than two years old and will hopefully reach a conclusion at the end of the three week trial.
