Perception will scare the hell out of PS4 owners

Perception has a unique pitch for a first-person videogame horror adventure; the protagonist players control is blind. Intrigued? Read on.

First announced back in 2015, Perception is the brainchild of a group of developers who worked on the first BioShock and Dead Space games. According to a report on Eurogamer, it’s going to land on the PS4.

The game’s story centres around a woman named Cassie who explores an abandoned – and rather sinister-looking – mansion to unravel a mystery that has haunted her dreams.

Since Cassie is blind, players have to ‘feel’ their way around her environment by tapping her cane on the floor and throwing objects against surfaces. This will create a sonar impression of Cassie’s surroundings, represented on screen as swirling, pulsing visuals.

The catch here is that the house is inhabited by a malignant collection of spirits known as ‘The Presence’ and every time Cassie makes a noise – which she needs to in order to find her way around – it’s alerted to her location. According to pitch on the game’s Kickstarter page, Cassie’s only defence against The Presence is either to hide or run, which casts it in the same mould as other survival horror games such as Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Alien: Isolation and Outlast.

Judging by the trailer, players are in for a thrilling – and rather terrifying – time of things:

If you want more details on the game, the project’s lead Bill Gardner has written a rather detailed post on the PlayStation Blog. Unfortunately there’s no word on a release date as yet. We’re hoping we don’t have to wait to long for this one…
