It’s not just the 1.6l Kuga catching fire – Report

Ford Motor Company South Africa has finally issued a recall of the 1.6l Ecoboost Kuga this week but according to a report by Times Live, the car manufacturer isn’t out of the woods yet.

Since Ford announced the recall of 4556 potentially fire prone Kugas, several owners of Ford motor vehicles have joined a class action lawsuit against the manufacturer.

The kicker here is that among those that own 1.6l Ecoboost Kugas, there are owners of 2.5l Kugas and 1.5l Ecoboost Kugas that claim their cars have spontaneously combusted as well.

The owner of a 2.5l Titanium Kuga alleges that his vehicle caught fire in 2015. The vehicle was reportedly parked in Sean Thompson’s garage with the ignition off when the car caught fire.

“Ford says it’s only the 1.6l EcoBoost that is affected and that the problem is a coolant one, but that’s rubbish. My fire was caused by an electrical fault linked to the seat’s heating system,” said Thompson.

The fire which resulted in the death of Reshall Jimmy in 2015 was also determined to have been caused by an electrical fault in the Ford Kuga he was driving.

An owner of a 1.5l Ecoboost Kuga, Malehotlo Makgamatha, says that her vehicle caught fire in 2016. An investigation into the fire revealed that it was caused by an incorrectly installed headlamp which caused the housing to melt and ignite says Times Live.

When asked whether it was sure the Ford 1.6l Ecoboost Kuga was the only car affected by the recall spokesperson Rella Bernardes said, “No other models or engine derivatives are affected.”

We now wait to see how the class-action lawsuit unfolds.
