The Division movie gets Syriana director

Ever heard of Stephen Gaghan? No? He’s a writer, director and producer of some standing in Hollywood and an Oscar-winner to boot.

Over the course of his career, Gaghan has written screenplays for numerous films including the spy thriller Syriana, the historical Western, The Alamo, and the multi-strand drama about the war on drugs, Traffic – for which he won the Academy Award for best adapted screenplay.

Oh, he was also one of the writers on Call Of Duty: Ghosts, but we won’t hold that against him.

Gaghan now looks set to renew his relationship with videogames as he’s just been tipped to be the director for the movie adaptation of Ubisoft’s MMO/FPS The Division.

According to Variety Magazine, Gaghan will also assume writing duties on the project, which already has Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain attached. We’re guessing Gaghan’s screenplay will focus on the story of a pandemic decimating the population of New York, rather than a bunch of cheating sods who hack reality to give themselves bigger weapons and better armour than anyone else.

Naturally, the question now arises: can an Oscar-winning talent produce an awesome movie adaptation of a videogame. As always we’re willing to be optimistic, but the deck is still stacked against The Division being any good.

The presence of Gyllenhaal isn’t a guarantee; gaming fans will remember he played the title role in the awful Prince Of Persia movie – which incidentally (and unfortunately) is still one of the best videogame film adaptations ever.

More recently, acting titans Michael Fassbender, Jeremy Irons and Marion Cotillard couldn’t make Assassin’s Creed worth watching for anything other than the odd parkour chase. Still, one can live in hope…
