SABC accused of censoring EFF stance on Hlaudi after live presser cuts

The SABC has been accused of censoring the EFF’s utterances on the controversial Hlaudi Motsoeneng after the live YouTube feed to its press briefing was cut moments after its leader, Julius Malema began talking about him.

The party was hosting media at its offices in Braamfontein following the third EFF Plenum meeting held at the weekend.

In true Malema style, the press conference was characterised by shots taken at the ANC and DA and various members of the parties.

Malema also talked about the state South Africa finds itself in as a result of corruption and collusion by the ANC and its allies.

“…That’s what happens when you’ve got a party where people with brains are sidelined. Leadership is cloudy, you know, ANC leadership is cloudy. If you want to see how ANC leaders look like just look at Hlaudi, then you’ll know the type of creme de la creme of the ANC,” Malema started off.

“Akere ko KZN [In KwaZulu-Natal] they [ANCYL] said he must be in the [ANC] NEC so…they’re looking for such things. So if you’ve got anything that looks like Hlaudi, just give to the ANC to be learnt by such things. There are no brains, they are gone and if there are no brains…” [the feed was cut exactly at this point, after which it showed the SABC 404 channel weather update].

There was no explanation as to why the feed was cut. The SABC was the only channel that was livestreaming the press conference, therefore viewers had no other alternative where they could carry on watching.

The EFF Twitter page continued tweeting the presser as Malema continued to lay into the ruling party. He was apparently then alerted to the feed cut and spoke about it.

The presser came back online shortly after that.

Motsoeneng has been said to allegedly order the cutting of certain SABC shows when presenters or commentators began speaking against the ANC or the SABC’s editorial policies last year.

The claims were made in the case brought against the SABC by the “SABC 8” journalists in August 2016.
