Man recreates every car from Wacky Races in LEGO

Like the Titans from Titanfall 2 that we have been featuring – if LEGO doesn’t make sets of the property you love, you have to do it yourself.

This is doubly true for older licences, such as the childhood staple of Wacky Races (yes, “Races” and not “Racers”). The classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon is probably best known for its bad guy more than anything. Dick Dastardly and his unfaithful canine companion Muttley even went off to star in a spin-off series, Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines.

But we’re focusing on Wacky Races today, and how artist Martin Redfern turned every car and every character from the show into a custom LEGO build you can see in the gallery below.

You can count them – all 11 race cars from the show are their complete with their drivers. In lieu of the LEGO minifigure, Redfern made the characters with good old LEGO bricks instead. This was done as the cars would be too small if they were scaled to fit minifigures, and a lot of the great detail you see here would be lost.

The first build posted – The Army Surplus Special – was only on November 10th of 2016. The final one in Dick Dastardly’s Mean Machine was shown off on the 20th of January 2017. That’s an absurdly short amount of time to build so many detailed cars.

“Given the LEGO, building one of these could take any thing from a couple of hours (Boulder Mobile) to all day, then usually followed by a day or so refining,” Redfurn said, “I don’t like to put a build down, so sometimes carry on through the night until [it was] completed.”

If you want to learn more about Redfern and how he made these cars, make sure you check out my interview with him on the LEGO fan blog The Brothers Brick.
