Don’t fall for the Free SAA Tickets scam on WhatsApp

Every so often a competition or giveaway pops up on social media that seems too good to be true. Often it’s a legitimate give away but sometimes it’s scam.

The latter happens to be the case with a competition which alleges that entrants can win two free plane tickets from South African Airways.

A reader has alerted us to a WhatsApp message they received which reads:

Hey, have you seen this? http://flysaa.gratïs.com I got mine ????????

We urge you not to type that URL into your phone for reasons we will outline in a moment. The URL is incredibly convincing and unless you know what to look for  (the word gratis and the fact that the domain is not flysaa.com) you might think it to be real.

The webpage which is not even linked to the official SAA domain asks users to answer questions about SAA offering them two airplane tickets for their time.

While that seems innocent enough after spending a few minutes on the site we were inundated with pop-ups to “win an iPhone” and join an adult content site.

If you couldn’t tell by now the competition is a hoax. If you need more evidence SAA confirmed this on its Facebook page.

“Please note that there is a Social Media hoax going around where you can win two free plane tickets,” writes the airline.

“If the competition is not announced on the www.flysaa.com website or on our official Social Media pages, then it can not be trusted.”

The competition is not being run by SAA and as such you should inform anybody that sends you this link that they may be giving away important information to miscreants on the internet who may later use it for nefarious purposes.

Warn your friends and family and whatever you do, do not click that link should you receive this message. There’s no telling what lurks on those pages.
