Pillars Of Eternity 2: Deadfire announced

Around two years ago, Obsidian Entertainment (the studio behind Fallout: New Vegas and Alpha Protocol) released Pillars Of Eternity.

The game was a fantastic homage to the isometric RPGs of yore and it garnered plaudits and sales by the truckload. The game was so successful, it spawned a two-part expansion pack; impressive, when one considers this was a game that only existed thanks to crowdfunding.

If you never played it, you missed out – and we thoroughly suggest you rectify this lapse in judgement as soon as possible. If you did, you’ll be delighted to hear that Obsidian has just announced it’s crowdfunding a sequel. Get your credit card ready.

The campaign to fund Pillars Of Eternity 2: Deadfire has launched on Fig and Obsidian is asking for $1.1 million from fans. If that sounds like a hard ask, bear in mind that the original Pillars Of Eternity on Kickstarter drew in around $4m in crowdfunding; in light of that $1.1m doesn’t seem unreasonable for an IP with a proven fanbase.

For returning fans, here’s the pitch for the new game:

Eothas has returned. The god of light and rebirth was thought dead, but he now inhabits the stone titan that sat buried under your keep, Caed Nua, for millennia. Ripping his way out of the ground, he destroyed your stronghold and left you at the brink of death. To save your soul, you must track down the wayward god and demand answers – answers which could throw mortals and the gods themselves into chaos.

Stirring stuff, we’re sure you’ll agree.

The sequel picks up from where the first game ended and according to the blurb on the Fig funder page, players can continue their narrative from the last game. From the sounds of things Obsidian is taking a leaf out of BioWare’s Mass Effect playbook.

If successfully funded, Pillars Of Eternity 2: Deadfire is looking to drop next year.
