Google launches R54 mil crisis campaign in the face of Trump’s immigrant ban

Google has launched its largest crisis campaign ever in which $4 million (~R54.4 millon) will be donated to four organisations in the face of President Donald Trump’s executive order against immigrants and refugees.

The order saw widespread protests happening throughout the United States for most of the weekend.

Warning, the video below contains language that some might find offensive.

Among those protesting was Google co-founder Sergey Brin who attended a protest at San Francisco International Airport and he is not the only Googler displeased with Trump’s actions.

Current Google chief executive officer Sundar Pichai sent out a memo at the weekend saying that the internet heavyweight had created a $2 million crisis fund which employees can contribute to to bring the total to $4 million.

The funds will be donated to the American Civil Liberties Union, the Immigrant Legal Resource Center, the International Rescue Commitee and the UNHCR.

At the weekend, Trump signed an executive order which bans refugees from entering the United States for 120 days, and stops refugees from Syria entering the country altogether.

The executive order also prevents residents of Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen from entering the country for 90 days.

“We’re concerned about the impact of this order and any proposals that could impose restrictions on Googlers and their families, or that could create barriers to bringing great talent to the U.S.” Google was quoted as saying by USA Today.

The president’s move has been opposed by the likes of Elon Musk and Brian Chesky the CEO of Airbnb.

Google is no stranger to taking action when politics get in the way of business. The firm quite shuttered its operations in China in 2010 due to censorship from the Chinese government.

How Google will respond should Trump take a more aggressive stance on immigrants and refugees however, remains to be seen.
