Gauteng townships with 100% 2016 matric pass to get full ICT treatment

The Gauteng Department of Education will reward townships schools which got a 100% matric pass rate for 2016 with full ICT infrastructure and software for all grades.

The announcement was made today when MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi, conducted a ceremony to recognise the schools and its top pupils.

Six township schools out of 32 public schools achieved 100%. They are:

  • Rietvallei Extension 1 Secondary School, Swaneville – Gauteng West District
  • Kgokare Secondary School, Sebokeng – Sedibeng West District.
  • Madibane Comprehensive School, Diepkloof, Soweto – Johannesburg North District.
  • Kwena Moloto Comprehensive Farm School, Bultfontein – Johannesburg North District.
  • Raymond Mhlaba Secondary School, Tshepisong – Johannesburg West
  • Prudence Secondary School – Tladi, Soweto – Johannesburg Central District.

These schools are part of the Senior Secondary Intervention Programme (SSIP), which is a research driven programme that targets and supports learners on subjects and topics they normally struggle with in an examination.

“These schools have proven that township schools can excel and break the shackles of poverty, and I pledge to provide all the necessary support they need,” said Lesufi.

Two former model C schools with an all-black pupil population, Kenilworth Secondary School and Raucall Secondary School were also recognised for achieving 100%.

In addition to laptops, tablets and smartboards for the whole school, the top three pupils from all nine schools will receive a full university bursary from the department.

“The department is pleased about the progress made by a number of schools that achieved a 100% pass mark in the 2016 National Senior Certificate examinations. This achievement makes us proud as the department and confirms that the investment made to improve schools in the township, are bearing fruits. The Department will work hard to increase the number of schools in the township that achieve 100%,” the department said.
