The lights go on at two of SA’s latest solar plants

Italian energy firm Enel has brought two solar photovoltaic power plants located in Northern Cape and Free State into commercial operation this week.

The two plants are Adams (Northern Cape) and Pulida (Free State) which will generate 82.5MW each and are expected to generate 318GWh of energy each year.

“Together with our local project partners, Enel Green Power RSA’s renewable energy projects are already making a significant contribution to the country’s economy, and these two new solar facilities are expected to add further value to those efforts,” Enel country manager for South Africa, William Price said.

These two plants spur along Enel’s efforts to push for renewable energy in SA.

The firm owns and operates the Paleisheuwel plant (Western Cape) which generates 82.5MW, Tom Burke (Limpopo) generating 66MW and Upington (Northern Cape) which generates 10MW.

Adams and Pulida are expected to avoid emissions of some 290 000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.

“The two solar plants are supported by a 20-year power supply agreement with South African power utility Eskom,” said the firm in a statement. Enel was awarded the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement tender in 2014.
