The next Ubuntu phone will be a modular one, like Google’s Project Ara

Mobile World Congress 2017 is a few weeks away and that means the rumour mill is operating at full tilt.

Will the LG G6 have a near-bezel-less display? Will Samsung reveal the Galaxy S8? Truthfully we won’t know until the end of February but we have gotten wind of something that will be at MWC 2017 and it has our inner geek squealing with delight.

A firm by the name of Fairphone together with UBports, will show off the Fairphone 2 running Ubuntu.

The handset features components such as the camera and speakers that can be swapped out easily should they need to be repaired. Conflict-free minerals are used in the manfacturing of the Fairphone 2.

Beyond the security aspects, we hope that having Ubuntu running on a handset would bring an end to needing to upgrade your smartphone just so that you have the most secure version of an operating system.

What’s under the hood?

Fairphone 2 uses a Snapdragon 801 platform with a quad-core Krait 400 CPU running at 2.26GHz. This is paired with an Adreno 330 GPU and 2GB of memory.

The smartphone features dual-SIM slots as well as a microSD card slot to increase the 32GB storage included on-board by as much as 64GB.

For snappers the Fairphone 2 has an 8MP shooter at the back and a 2MP one at the front for selfies.

Other notable features include a 5inch Full HD (1080 x 1920) display and WiFi support up to the 802.11ac standard.

We’re genuinely excited to see Canonical committing to open source Ubuntu smartphones like this, especially after the news that Mozilla’s Firefox OS has been canned.
