Nintendo Switch downloadable game sizes released

The Nintendo Switch’s launch is locked in for next Friday – aren’t you all excited?

If you’ve been saving up for a Switch (its local RRP is R5 299 and extra peripherals can cost you up to a grand a piece) we have some news that may make your credit card scream; you’re basically going to have fork out for some extra storage.

The reason for this is that the house of Mario & Luigi has decided to release information on the size of downloadable games files for the Switch. Admittedly some of them are reasonably sized – Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is 7GB, Disgaea 5 clocks in at just over 5GB and The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild is 13GB.

The real eyebrow-raiser in the pack, however, is Dragon Quest 1 & 2, which comes in at a whopping 32GB. Yes, we know, there are bigger games than that on PS4 and Xbox One – Final Fantasy XV is over 50GB on both consoles.

The problem here, though, is that Dragon Quest 1 & 2’s size makes it the same size as the Nintendo Switch’s hard drive space. The size of the Switch’s onboard storage is 32GB, but the console needs a further 6.1GB in order to run the operating system. So essentially, the game is too big to download and play on a Switch. You’ll need a Micro SD to make it work.

Here’s a list of the game file sizes for the Switch as released by Nintendo via IGN.

  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 13.4GB
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 7GB
  • Snipperclips: Cut it Out, Together! – 1.60GB
  • Disgaea 5 – 5.92GB
  • Puyo Puyo Tetris – 1.09GB
  • I Am Setsuna – 1.40GB
  • Dragon Quest Heroes I·II – 32GB
  • Nobunaga’s Ambition – 5GB
