Gear of the Year Awards – Fibre Providers

There are Internet Service Providers, who provide internet access via a variety of different access methodologies to end users, and then there are fibre providers who lay the cables and create the physical networks on which ISPs offer fibre-based connectivity. These are the providers our readers chose as their favourites.

WINNER

Telkom

Our national telecoms provider quickly went to the top of the list of local companies putting down fibre networks. That could be because laying fibre isn’t something you see advertised as much as, say, an awesome LTE/Fibre/ADSL package from Internet Service Provider X, so it’s usually the companies who add services on top of that fibre that get the attention.

It’s not much of a surprise, then, that Telkom came first in our list of fibre network providers, as they are the most visible of all the companies doing the hard work of digging the holes, wiring up the DSLAMs and laying the physical cables.

Vumatel came a very respectable second, with 24.7% of the vote.

Well done, Telkom. We’re only too happy to see the public taking note of the major effort you’re putting into laying the fibre foundation of the country’s future internet offers.

Journalist’s choice

Deon du Plessis

I’m in the Vumatel camp, as it’s the company I have most often come into contact with when investigating the fibre options in my area. In my search, I have come across Vumatel’s online portal where they link to all of the ISPs that offer fibre connections on their network, in an easy to read format. And from what I hear, they’re looking to wire a lot more suburbs for fibre access in the near future, so drop them a line if you want fibre access in your area sooner rather than later.
