Gear of the Year – Monitors

2016 was a stunningly good year for screens. Tech has been improving for years now, but finally new ideas like Ultra Widescreens and 4K panels are becoming the norm and not the exception. Here’s what our readers thought was the best screen of 2016.

Dell stuffed this particular monitor full of the latest innovations in screen technology, so it’s no wonder it captured the imaginations of the majority of our readers.

It was just a small majority, however, as this category was very tightly-contested – the Dell won by a tiny 0.2% margin over LG’s 34-inch 34UC98-W UltraWide IPS curved monitor, which itself only beat the next runner up – Samsung’s Ultra Widescreen 34-inch S34E790C – by a tiny 0.8%.

But the win is understandable; this monster screen offers a huge 43-inch viewing area, which is as big as you can get in a commercial business-ready monitor without venturing into TV territory. What’s so good about it is that you get all the goodness of monitor tech – an IPS panel for excellent colour reproduction and viewing angles and a fast response time that a TV just can’t beat – in a massive screen that can accommodate four different sources at the same time, or connect to a single UHD/4K/3840 x 2160 video source at a time.

Curves, shmurves – we‘re pretty sure our readers loved this monster flat screen for its sheer size, its impressive IPS panel and its productivity-enhancing potential. Whatever the case, it’s our Monitor winner in this year’s GOTY awards.

Journalist’s choice

Deon du Plessis

I’m a PC gamer, so ask me for my monitor of the year and I’ll go with something as big as possible, with an Ultra Widescreen form factor and NVIDIA’s G-Sync tech built in. That being the case, I’d have been happier to see ASUS’s PG348Q Republic of Gamers Swift 34-inch Ultra Widescreen G-Sync screen doing a little better, coming in as it did with only 15% of the votes. I am a sad panda.
