How annoying is Patches the Pirate? Hearthstone YouTuber uses data to find out

Anybody that plays a decent amount of Hearthstone will know the sinking feeling of hearing the sound of cannon fire and the phrase, “I’m in charge now!”

For those of you lucky enough to not know what we’re on about, we’re talking about the neutral Legendary card released in the Mean Streets of Gadgetzan expansion – Patches the Pirate.

This seemingly innocuous 1-mana 1/1 Pirate card has dominated the Hearthstone meta-game of late and plucky YouTuber and Hearthstone streamer, Disguised Toast, decided to investigate just how bad the situation was.

The YouTuber – who we shall refer to as Toast as his real name is rather tricky to find – used data from HS Decktracker and HS Replay to analyse data from over 700 000 games played between 11th – 15th February.

For those that can’t watch the video above here’s a brief summation.

Patches is incredibly popular with Shaman, Rogue and Warrior classes. When facing a Shaman you will see Patches 62% of the time, if you face Warrior or Rogue that frequency rises to 88%.

Overall Toast found that 71% of games played in the period he analysed contained Patches.

Truth be told while Patches is annoying, his cohort Small-Time Buccaneer is far more powerful and has become somewhat of an auto-include in classes that can equip weapons.

Blizzard has taken note of this and has said that it will nerf Small-Time Buccaneer.

Until that patch however, we’re going to be salty about the popularity of pirates, especially when winning against them is an uphill battle.
