Map Monday: Can’t sleep? See who’s up with you at a given time around the globe

It’s 2:15am, you’ve tried to sleep but insomnia just won’t let you have it. Next thing you know, you’re on Twitter, tweeting about your inability to doze off… and guess what? You’re among plenty of others around the globe doing the exact same thing.

Hillarys, a UK retailer of blinds, curtains, shutters and carpets, drew up a map which collates tweets about sleeplessness from around the globe to create The Sleep Loss Map.

The Sleep Loss Map uses data from Twitter by scanning tweets for specific phrases associated with sleeplessness that are posted in the world’s most widely-spoken languages and geo-locates the tweets to pinpoint where they are posted from.

In the past 24 hours alone, more than 214 000 tweets about sleeplessness were posted (with timezone difference taken into consideration) from around the globe, including South Africa.

Since the Sleep Loss Map was launched on 19th December 2016, over 1.3 million tweets have been posted.

It also includes possible reasons why you can’t sleep, and tips on how to ensure a good night’s rest. Our top tip would be to get plenty of exercise during the day and to eat healthy; there are plenty more on the site.
