Huawei’s partnership with Leica continues with the P10

A flurry of news comes to us from Spain as Mobile World Congress 2017 has kicked off, and the first bit of that news is Huawei has a new smartphone for this year.

Truth be told it’s unlikely this will the only smartphone we see from the firm this year but it is the first, and it builds on a few of the successes of 2016’s P9 – like its camera.

As with last year’s P-series handset the P10 will come in two variants: the 5.1inch P10 and a 5.5inch P10 Plus.

Both handsets run on Huawei’s own HiSilicon Kirin 960 chipset with an octa-core CPU handling the grunt work. It’s a similar configuration to the one we saw in the Mate 9 and we hope that this means the P10 will be a more powerful device than the P9 was.

For storage the P20 comes with 64GB on-board while the P10 Plus offers up the same storage as well as an iteration with 128GB. Both versions of the handset can increase their storage capabilities with a microSD card.

Dual-snappers are back again

Both the P10 and the Plus sport a dual camera with Leica optics. There is a 20MP monochrome sensor for superior black and white photography and that’s paired with a full-colour 12MP sensor.

This is a considerable bump up from the snapper we saw in the P9 and our experience with the Mate 9 (which uses a similar configuration) is that the image quality is superb.

The features that make a premium smartphone a premium smartphone such as USB-Type C, fast charging, 802.11ac WiFi and support for LTE are all part of the P10’s package.

The P10 is set to launch in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and other countries in March according to The Verge but we didn’t see mention of South Africa on that list.
