Gear of the Year Awards – Gaming Laptops

Nothing says “I’m doing pretty OK” quite like rolling into a LAN carrying a gaming laptop with more power hidden in its almost unbelievably slim chassis than most of the desktops there have can boast. With that in mind, here’s the gaming laptop most of you chose as your “Best of 2016”.

This one wasn’t a huge surprise. Going on what we saw of Gigabyte’s efforts throughout 2016, the company did a great job of not only packing fantastic technology into its gaming laptops, but also making sure the final product looked and felt good and was priced reasonably. That last one is incredibly important to the SA market, as SAfricans are notoriously price-sensitive consumers.

The P35X V6 exemplified everything a winning laptop should be. Its gorgeous and surprisingly thin aluminium chassis managed to pack in a lot of fantastic hardware that produced gaming performance that impressed a group of notoriously cynical buyers – gamers – largely because of its desktop-class GTX1070 with its 8GB of VRAM. That, performing in tandem with a high-end 6th-gen Core-i7 chip and 16GB of DDR4 RAM, brought frame rates that rivaled even those of desktop systems. And all for less than R40 000. That’s impressive.

While this particular model has been replaced by the P37X v6 that offers even more bang for your buck, it’s still a worthy of the Gaming Laptop award in our Gear of the Year roundup because it paved the way for future greatness.

Keep an eye on Gigabyte’s current and future gaming laptops, the company appears determined to woo even the most difficult-to-please gamers with current and future products alike.

I am in total agreement with our voters. Gaming laptops have to do three things to impress me: I want exemplary performance, exceptional build quality and excellent heat management, and the P35X V6 has all three. But it’s the sub-R40k price that impressed the most – I couldn’t believe the performance I was seeing was A) desktop-class and B) on offer for less than R40k. Just wow.
