WhatsApp brings photos and videos to your status message

WhatsApp is celebrating its upcoming eighth birthday by overhauling the status message feature to allow you to set photos and videos as your status.

The service has already started rolling out the end-to-end encrypted service, which will allow your contacts to see whatever multimedia media and text you put up as a status.

The feature mimicks Snapchat and Instagram stories as it only last for up to 24 hours at a time and contacts can respond to your messages via text.

WhatsApp highlighted that this update is actually an ode to its past when it first started out as an app that let your friends and other contacts know what you’re up to and had no instant messaging features.

This is what the original app looked like on a mobile.

“Even after we added messaging in the summer of 2009, we kept the basic “text only” status functionality in WhatsApp. Every year, when Brian and I would plan projects to work on, we always talked about improving and evolving this original “text only” status feature,” CEO, Jan Koum explained.

“Just like eight years ago when we first started WhatsApp, this new and improved status feature will let you keep your friends who use WhatsApp easily updated in a fun and simple way. From all of us at WhatsApp, we hope you enjoy it,” Koum said.

Update your WhatsApp app from your relevant app store and find the new feature in the status tab.
