Among Titans – Nvidia reveals the GTX 1080 Ti

The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti will be available in the US in March and while it shares its name with the GTX 1080 the card has more in common with the Titan X.

The card is the first GeForce branded GPU to contain Nvidia’s GP102 chip. True, the chip can be found in the Titan X but that card is aimed at the enthusiast and professional market where GeForce has become a brand aimed squarely at gamers.

GTX 1080 Ti GTX 1080 Titan X
CUDA Cores 3584 2560 3584
Base Clock 1480MHz 1607MHz 1417MHz
Boost Clock 1582MHz 1733MHz 1531MHz
Memory Speed 11Gbps 10Gbps 10Gbps
Memory 11GB GDDR5X 8GB GDDR5X 12GB GDDR5X
Memory Bandwidth 484GB/s 320GB/s 480GB/s
TDP 250W 180W 250W

On paper the 1080 Ti and the Titan appear rather similar but according to a report from Kitguru, Nvidia uses the latest generation of GDDR5X from Micron in the 1080 Ti. This memory is faster than that found in the Titan X, 4GB/s faster to be precise.

Weirdly, Nvidia has disabled one of the memory chips in the GTX 1080 Ti giving it the bizarre memory spec of 11GB opposed to the Titan’s 12GB.

Nvidia has also ditched the DVI connector and instead offers up three DisplayPort 1.4 connectors and one HDMI 2.0 connector. This should, according to Anandtech, bring better cooling to the GTX 1080 Ti as the second slot of the card is no longer home to a bulky DVI port.

The GTX 1080 Ti is expected to launch in the US next week with a price tag of $699 (~R9191,28) but sadly there is no word on when we can expect the 1080 Ti to hit our shores or how much we can expect to pay.

If previous Ti versions of Nvidia cards are anything to go by though we suspect our love affair with the vanilla GTX 1080 may be over, so long as our wallets are willing to co-operate.
