New Borderlands UE4 tech makes a splash at GDC

If you’re a fan of Gearbox’s cel-shaded shoot ‘n’ loot series Borderlands, your ears may have pricked up if you’ve been following the Games Development Conference (GDC).

Gearbox head Randy Pitchford took to the stage during Epic’s keynote to show off the Unreal Engine 4 technology that the developer is going to use to power the next Borderlands game.

Pitchford made it clear from the beginning that this presentation was tech demo rather than a game demonstration, but he also added that the assets on display could feasibly end up in a finished game.

If you’re a budding artist or become excited by visual aspects such as shading, textures and shadows, the above video may send you into convulsions of ecstasy because the artwork on display is admittedly beautiful.

For the rest of you, keep watching for the pan shot that occurs at around 10:24 in the video. Even though Pitchford reiterates that this is a tech demo, the scene that unfolds sure looks like a piece of a finished game.

Given the fact that Pitchford stated at PAX last year that Gearbox has already begun work on a new Borderlands game, it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that some of the above footage may wind up in it. We can hear you Borderlands fans salivating from here.

In the meantime, if you want to scratch that Pandora itch, it’s worth noting that Borderlands 2 is part of Xbox’s Games With Gold this month and you can pick it up for free if you download it before March 15th. Don’t say we never do anything for you…
